Sunrise is the US Naval Observatory's time for Penelokan on the 15th of each month, local time (UTC+8). Seasons: Indonesia.travel's dry months and the Batur geopark's rainy months; no weather station is used, so no temperatures are shown.
You can watch the sun clear Mount Batur from the Penelokan viewpoint in Kintamani, a misty village or the middle of the lava. Here is how the spots differ, what time the sun comes up each month and when to be there.

Three places to see the sun clear the volcano
Penelokan is the easiest. Indonesia.travel says the name means "place to look" and that the roadside gives a sweeping view across the whole Kintamani caldera, with Mount Batur, the lake and the Black Lava in one frame.2 The Batur Global Geopark calls the same spot an easy stop to take photographs, eat with a view or start a walk.7 You park, you walk to a railing, and the volcano is in front of you. It is the sunrise view that asks for the least effort and the least gear. The Pinggan sunrise viewpoint in Kintamani is the village option for watching sunrise above a misty valley.3
Pinggan is the quiet one. The ministry's article lists Pinggan Village for sunrise above a misty valley, no hiking required, and paints thick mist blanketing the settlements below, a "land above the clouds" scene.3,8 It suits travelers who want first light without a strenuous climb, the page says.8 Pinggan lies on the northern side of the caldera map, a different compass bearing from the rim at Penelokan, so you get the volcano at a different angle.
The Black Lava is the loud one. It is a wide field of dark volcanic rock and sand, the leftovers of frozen flows of Mount Batur, a favorite location for off-road jeep and dirt-bike rides.9 A sunrise there means being driven across the lava in the dark and stopping where the view opens, rather than walking to a railing. Cafes on the rim are the fourth option, and Indonesia.travel advises arriving around 05:30 to 06:00 to secure a prime spot in them.1

Sunrise spots on the rim compared
| Spot | The sight | Routes up | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Penelokan | Caldera, lake and lava together | Roadside railing | Hardly any |
| Pinggan | Mist over the valley | A village outlook | Skip the climb |
| Black Lava | Dark rock under a pale sky | By off-road jeep | A bumpy ride |
| Rim cafes | The view from a seat | Arrive by 05:30 to 06:00 | A short walk |

What the sun does: first light and sunrise across the year
The US Naval Observatory publishes the times for the Penelokan area, and the pattern is tidy. In mid-January first light comes at 05:49 and the sun is up at 06:11.11 On 15 March the pair is 06:02 and 06:23, and on 15 May it is 06:01 and 06:23.13,14 The dry months run later: sunrise is 06:21 on 15 April, 06:30 on 15 June and 06:28 on 15 August, and on 15 July first light is at 06:12 with sunrise at 06:34.15,16,17,5 February is 06:22 on the 15th.18 The sunrise stays within a narrow band all year because Indonesia sits near the equator, so you never need to plan around a dramatically late morning.
The early end of the year is the opposite. For mid-September the pair is 05:52 and 06:12; on 15 October the times are 05:35 and 05:56; on 15 November they are 05:26 and 05:48, the earliest sunrise of those fifteenths.19,20,4 On 15 December the sun rises at 05:55.21 Plan the pickup, not the sunrise: the sun is steady, and what changes is how early the road has to start to put you at a viewpoint before it.
These are single days, the 15th of each month, worked out for Penelokan on local time.11 They are not an average, and cloud, haze and the caldera rim itself decide when you actually see the disc. Indonesia.travel recommends July and August for sunrise because of stable hiking weather,12 and the geopark counts the rainy season from December to May.22 A clear dawn in the wet months is still possible, but the odds are the ministry's, not ours, and it is worth a second morning if the first is cloud.
Dry months, crowds and the cold that comes with altitude
The ministry's pick for a clear view of Mount and Lake Batur is the dry season, May to September.6 It adds July and August for sunrise because of stable weather, with the best views between 06:00 and 10:00 WITA.12 That last window is generous, and it means the morning does not end with the sun. If clouds fill the bowl when the sun comes up, wait: Indonesia.travel describes the sea of mist as part of the attraction at Pinggan,8 and the cloud may break an hour later.
Crowds follow the calendar. The ministry says Kintamani is very crowded on weekends and quieter on weekdays, with better photo opportunities.24 A weekday sunrise at Penelokan therefore has more room at the railing. Cafes fill earlier than viewpoints, and the same page advises arriving by 05:30 to 06:00 to secure a spot in them.1 If you travel on a weekend, pick Pinggan or a lava stop, where you are not sharing a railing.
Dress for the altitude, not the coast. Indonesia.travel says Kintamani runs far cooler than the coast and recommends a jacket, sweater or scarf for sunrise.25 The wait at the railing is long and motionless, which is colder than it sounds. Gloves are a luxury, but a second thin layer under the jacket is the difference between enjoying the sun and counting minutes until it warms up. Keep a hot drink in reach, and cash for the stall that sells it.26

Getting to the railing: jeep, car or a cafe breakfast
A jeep driver solves the dark road. The operator of the Batur hot-spring jeep tour puts pickups in a 01:30 to 03:00 window set by the hotel, and later for guests staying nearer Kintamani.10 The main listing of this site counts the car ride at 80 minutes each way, a private group can be arranged, and the day lasts 5 to 9 hours, the length set by the starting time. It rates 4.80 from 4,187 reviews and starts from $45. A hot spring break of 1.5 hours is optional at the end. The Mount Batur sunrise itself needs no climb from any of these rails.
Driving yourself is allowed, and the ministry flags the cost of doing it: the road has steep climbs and sharp turns, and it advises checking brakes and engine before the ascent.27 For a first visit in the dark, a driver who knows where the viewpoint opens is a real saving of stress. If you do drive, leave in time to reach the railing in the advised window1 and carry cash for fee posts, since many accept nothing else.26
A cafe breakfast is the gentle version. A private 8-hour listing is built around a sunrise breakfast at a Kintamani cafe and a tour of Ubud, with a rating of 5.00 from 14 reviews and a price from $51. It trades the lava for a seat and a hot drink, and the ministry's advice to reach cafes by 05:30 to 06:00 applies to it too.1 Choose it when the point of the morning is the view itself and not the ride.

Sunset on the same railing, and a short photo plan
Penelokan has a second performance. Indonesia.travel suggests it at sunset, when the sky over the viewpoint turns to orange and purple gradients and the lights of the villages in the valley flicker on.23 If sunrise is cloud-covered on your only morning, an evening at the same railing is a fair substitute, and it asks for no alarm clock. The jeep options for the evening are a different product, covered on the page that compares sunrise and sunset rides.
A photo plan is simple. Arrive before the light, find the railing or the edge you want, and frame the cone of Mount Batur low in the picture so that the lake and the sky share the rest. Use the first ten minutes for wide shots, and the next ten for the details: a farmer, a mist bank, a jeep's headlights on the lava. Switch off the flash, keep your phone warm in a pocket between shots, and do not step past a railing for a better angle.
Leave room for the second half of the morning. The ministry's own window for good views is 06:00 to 10:00,12 so the sun is only the opening act. After it clears the volcano, the caldera lights up in color, and the black lava stands out against the green slopes. Plan the next stop before you leave the viewpoint, whether it is a hot spring, a cafe breakfast or the temple, and the day will feel unrushed.
